Review Rating: 4/10 *
Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Michael Pitt, Takeshi Kitano and Pilou Asbaek
When to watch: When you want to see just how bad a Hollywood take on an Asian original can be.
I vaguely remember when the film “Ghost In A Shell” was announced, there was a bit of a furore around the casting, but I didn’t pay it much mind as I had never heard of the original Manga series. What I did pay attention to, was the critics roundly panning the efforts of director Rupert Sanders and his cast. As a result, I decided to swerve it at the cinema. Thankfully Netflix had my back and I finally got to sample the film without wasting my money.
The film follows Major (Scarlett Johansson) as the cyber-enhanced protagonist, created to be the perfect soldier, a cross between cyborg and human. Major must combat the rampant terrorist violence spreading through the city, whilst also trying to rediscover her life before enhancement that eludes her memory for reasons unknown.
If you haven’t gathered by now, I was not a big fan of this film. But between the pretty bland script, average at best acting and whitewashing of the main character, there was at least some half-decent visual effect to keep me watching till the end. Ghost in a shell is not Scarlett Johansson’s finest hour, that’s for sure.
